Short films are a powerful expression of creativity and storytelling, and MIFF proudly showcases compelling short-form cinema from South Africa, the African continent, and around the world. We welcome all genres—drama, comedy, experimental, animation, and more—that deliver impactful narratives in under 40 minutes.
Our short film category is designed to celebrate emerging voices and seasoned filmmakers who are redefining storytelling in unique and bold ways. Selected short films will be screened during the festival and considered for awards in various categories, including Best Short Film, Best Director, and Audience Choice. MIFF offers short filmmakers the opportunity to connect with a broader audience, gain international exposure, and participate in Q&As, networking events, and workshops that can elevate their careers.
MIFF creates opportunities for short films to travel beyond the festival through touring showcases, school activations, and community cinema programs. We believe short films are not just stepping stones—they are standalone works of art that can challenge ideas, spark conversations, and reflect the realities of our time in a powerful and concise way. By submitting your short film to MIFF, you become part of a movement that values bold vision, authentic voices, and stories that matter.
